Is It Lice? 5 Signs You Have Head Lice

Lice: they are never a welcome guest in your home (or on your scalp). If you suspect head lice have invaded your space, don’t panic! There are straightforward ways to determine whether you or your loved ones actually have lice and, if so, what to do about it. With that in mind, here are some helpful tips for identifying and ridding yourself of head lice.

#1: It’s Not Dandruff

These tiny little parasites are small enough to look like dandruff, but they are, in fact, lice eggs (or nits). Nits are usually oval-shaped and can be yellow or white in color. Dandruff will simply flake off; lice won’t. These little clingers will attach themselves to the hair shaft like cement. Still unsure? See additional differences between lice and dandruff.

#2: The Constant Scratch

Lice will make the scalp itch like it has never itched before. We are not just talking about an “annoying little itch.” It is usually described as incredibly intense itching that can’t be soothed easily, and is most commonly felt around the neck, ears, and top of the head.

#3: There Are Rashes or Bumps

Lice can often cause small red bumps on the neckline and/or shoulders. These red bumps could indicate there has been intense scratching. If not addressed promptly, these rashes could become infected.

#4: You Have Recently Been Exposed to Them

Close proximity to somebody who has/had head lice puts you (or your child) at risk of contracting lice, as well. This is especially the case if brushes, furniture, or hats have been shared with said individual. Although lice can’t jump or fly, they are easily spread in confined spaces — particularly among children who play together and share belongings.

#5: You Find a Sesame Seed on You, butIt Moves

Well, this one is admittedly a little alarming, and it may make you squirm just reading it, but if you find something on you or your child that looks like a dancing sesame seed when you touch it, there is a good chance you have a lice infestation. Lice are extremely common, and millions of people experience it every year. If this is you, here is what you should do: First, take a deep breath and relax. There is no need to sweat the stigma. Getting lice is not a sign of unwashed or unclean hair. In fact, they thrive in clean hair! Don’t burn your house down and don’t start replacing expensive furnishings or mattresses. There is no need to do this and it will just cause you unnecessary stress and create added expenses you don’t need. Second, avoid trying to get rid of the lice yourself with wacky home remedies like pouring olive oil, Listerine, or mayonnaise on your head. These so-called “solutions” not only don’t work, but can also be dangerous. Finally, call the professionals at Hair Fairies so they can provide the solutions that work. We offer a thorough screening evaluation where we will check the hair for nits and lice.
